In a world of commerce, labels are an important and common thing. We label, products, shops, brand names, animals - you name it. Whatever can be bought or sold is labeled accordingly. It is necessary in order to make the items unique and distinct, easily remembered by the millions of consumers.
However, as much as labelling should be limited to things, for ages, humans have extended labelling to even people. What happens when we label people? We put them in a box and start viewing them one-dimensionally. This can be harmful, especially where children are concerned.
Toddler Bed Safety
Though seemingly innocent enough, at school, kids are labeled by their teachers and peers. There's the class clown, there's the class bully, and oh, she's the class diva. There's the child who seems to be the most likely to succeed and even the one who is likely to get married first.
This might seem harmless and trivial enough, but it can do harm if a child actually starts believing in the label. Labels tend to make people close-minded about a child's personality which can cause the child to lose self-esteem and motivation.
If the label is negative, then there is the danger that people will commit to that perception, making it hard for change or even improvement on the other person's part. When we decide that a person is the way he is, then we, in a way, force them to stay that way.
When people are labelled, they tend to rebel. They do not want to show how hurt or angry they are but might instead play on these perceptions as a way of getting back. They retreat into their own private world and push people away, accepting they are social rejects.
This isolation is in now way positive as it can lead to anti-social behavior, identity crisis, and even substance abuse. It's a sad outcome to what seemed to be a harmless label.
So how about we stop labeling people with their general behavior. Lets accept that people are individuals, unique and too complex to label in general. Labels should stay where they are supposed to - on a can.
